Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed says despite deficiencies in the criminal justice system, the Police will continue to disrupt the trafficking of narcotic drugs.
He made the comments in a tweet revealing the details of a major anti-drug operation that was undertaken by several branches of Maldives Police Services.
Hameed had said that DED, Drug Intelligence & Marine Police have been operating on the sea and land for more than a week to disrupt a trafficking activity, seize the drugs and arrest the individuals who belong to the trafficking network.
He revealed that 10 persons were arrested since morning and that multiple locations have been searched.
The Commissioner also said that the police had seized approximately 71 kgs of heroin that would have the street value of MVR 7 million. He said that the police found 71 bags containing the narcotics during a search of a vehicle parked in Male' today.
Police had said that the drugs were found in four bags placed in the car.
It said that the police was further investigating the matter.
Anti-drug operations have become commonplace in recent months with the Police disrupting both major and small drug trafficking networks in the country.
