The newly developed Airport in Haa Alifu Hoarafushi has successfully conducted a test flight today ahead of its grand opening scheduled for tomorrow.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is scheduled to inaugurate the airport tomorrow.
Today’s test flight landed at the fresh tarmac around 9:00 am this morning. Many islanders from Hoarafushi gathered to witness the test flight while the MP for the constituency Ahmed Saleem and other top officials attended the event.
The airport is expected to have a 1200m long runway with an 8635 sqm apron and taxiway. MTCC had reclaimed 842,200 cubic meters of the sea in order to develop the airport.
National carrier Maldivian said today that once the airport is officially inaugurated tomorrow, scheduled flights to the airport would begin soon.
The airport in Hoarafushi would fulfill the dream of many living on the island and across the Haa Alifu Atoll as the nearest airport is the one in Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo.
