Maldives Immigration says a total of 7628 tourists arrived in the Maldives in the month of August as the country prepares to revamp the security measures it had taken against the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a tweet, Immigration said that on average 218 tourists arrived per day in the month of August as opposed to July when the immigration recorded 100 tourists arriving in the country per day on average.
But the country reopened its borders in mid-July after closing it for four months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Immigration also said that in the month of August 373 tourists arrived in the country on a single day and that this was the maximum single-day arrival for the month. It said that in July, a maximum of 218 tourists arrived on a single day.
The monthly statistics showed that most of the tourists who visited the Maldives in August were from the United Arab Emirates with 1627 Emiratis arriving in the country.
It was followed by the UK from which 715 tourists arrived in the Maldives in August while 674 from the US visited the country last month.
Immigration said that while 513 Spaniards visited the Maldives in August 423 Russians, 306 Germans, 301 French nationals, 252 Ukrainians, 179 Egyptian nationals and 168 Brazilians had also traveled to the Maldives last month.
Yesterday, the Tourism Ministry had said that starting from the 10th of this month all tourists and short-term visitors must present a Negative PCR certificate on arrival in the Maldives.
The Ministry said that the Health Protection Agency HPA has made this mandatory for the safety of all.
It added that the said PCR test must be conducted within a maximum of 72 hours prior to departure to the Maldives.
