Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has vehemently responded to recent allegations of corruption against the government from the opposition.

In a tweet today, the former president said that although opposition parties accuse that the corruption allegations against the current government are numerous, the public will see how the MDP government is working to reform the problematic areas through an MDP majority held parliament.

Nasheed noted that during the reign of the former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom the parliament was not given the chance to perform its duties and instead Yameen used the might of the armed forces MNDF to ‘find’ a solution.

His fervent defense comes amid a cloud of corruption against the ruling coalition government after the Auditor-General published the COVID-19 compliance audit report for the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Tourism, two of the ministries at the forefront in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The audit report on the Tourism Ministry revealed that the ministry had spent millions on expenditures outside its mandate. Meanwhile, the compliance audit report on the Minister of Health revealed several irregularities mainly regarding the procurement of 75 ventilators from a company in Dubai under shady circumstances.
