The Government has spent MVR 1.1 billion in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic which has claimed 20 lives here in the Maldives.
Finance Ministry statistics show that most of the funds were allocated to the Health Ministry and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
NDMA had spent MVR 703 million while the Health Ministry had spent MVR 166.8 million to combat the global pandemic.
The Finance Ministry statistics also show that the government has spent MVR 84.1 million from the country’s disaster management fund while it withdrew MVR 27.7 million from the Tourism Activities Implementation Fund to fight against COVID-19.
It also withdrew MVR 3 million from the Zakat fund to shore up cash flow as the pandemic has left a damaging imprint on the country’s booming economy.
Also, in the course of the country’s ongoing fight against COVID-19, the planning ministry had spent MVR 37.3 million, MNDF had disbursed MVR 13.1 million while National Social Protection Agency NSPA spent MVR 4.8 million and the foreign Ministry spent MVR 3.9 million
Finance Ministry statistics also revealed that most of the government expenditure was on the medical equipment and supplies required to fight the global pandemic with the government buying medical equipment and supplies worth MVR 507.6 million on it.
