Health Protection Agency HPA Epidemiologist Dr. Ibrahim Afzal says the number of active cases of COVID-19 in the country has reached an all-time high since the outbreak first hit the Maldives back in March.

Speaking at the latest news briefing by Health Emergency Operations Center HEOC, Dr. Afzal confirmed that 116 individuals tested positive for COVID-19 in the country today.

This included 77 Maldivians, 27 Bangladeshis, 6 Sri Lankans, 5 Indians, and 1 Nepalese national.

Dr. Afzal said that with the new cases the active cases of COVID-19 have now reached 2303 and that this is the first time active cases reached such numbers throughout the pandemic.

HPA statistics showed that out of the 116 new cases reported today, 111 were confirmed in the Greater Male’ region while another 5 were reported from the islands.

The total number of positive cases of COVID-19 now stands at 5157.

Meanwhile, the number of recoveries has now reached 2835.

But HPA confirmed that 145 individuals remained hospitalized for further treatment and that 1452 remained under isolation.

The pandemic has now claimed 19 lives in the Maldives including 14 locals and 5 foreigners.
