Health Emergency Operations Center HEOC Spokesperson Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq says police have fined 79 individuals for violating an 7-hour curfew imposed in the Greater Male’ Area to restrict movement and prevent further spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Addressing the media, Dr. Nazla said since the 10 pm to 5 am curfew was imposed in the Greater Male’ Area last week, police have cautioned a total of 157 individuals who were caught outside during those hours.
She also said that police had fined a total of 79 individuals for repeated offenses of violating the curfew.
The Health Emergency Operations Center declared the 7-hour curfew in the Greater Male’ Area last Tuesday and ordered the complete halt of movement within the capital city between the hours of 10 pm and 5 am.
HEOC also said that takeaway and deliveries should also be stopped from 10 pm each night and that businesses should close around 9:30 pm to accommodate an effective curfew.
These strict measures were implemented as the country is currently experiencing a surge of new cases of COVID-19 in the country with over 600 new cases reported in the past five days.
The total number of COVID-19 cases in the country has now reached 4898 since the country recorded its first case of COVID-19 earlier this year.
