Maldives Police Service has confirmed that several of its officers working on the frontline of the fight against COVID-19 have tested positive for the global pandemic as the country prepares for a second wave of cases.

In a statement, Police said in recent demonstrations held in Male’, protesters have failed to maintain social distancing and are not using facemasks as per the guidelines set by the Health Protection Agency HPA.

Police reiterated that the number of new cases of COVID-19 is on the rise in the country and that the number of police officers who had contracted the illness has also increased.

Although the police alluded that the several of its officers have tested positive for COVID-19, it did not provide an exact figure in its statement.

The police warning came as HPA confirmed 137 new cases of COVID-19 in the country, the highest since the government eased the lockdown last June.

HPA had said that out of the 137 individuals 92 were locals and that the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country has now reached 3506.
