Former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik says today’s discussion at the parliament was unwarranted and wasteful.

This comes after the MP for Ungoofaaru constituency Mohamed Waheed presented an emergency motion to the parliament alleging that the former president fabricated the verbal attack on the former leader yesterday by an activist belonging to the ruling MDP.

While debating the motion, MPs representing the ruling party called on authorities to rescind the allowances given to Dr. Waheed as a former president and also to arrest the former president for the crimes committed against the people of the Maldives.

In a tweet, Dr. Waheed said that the activist didn’t call him a traitor but used foul and vulgar language while also accusing the former president of stealing state funds.

Dr. Waheed said that he did not lodge any charges against his attacker. The incident was reported to the police by the former president’s security detail that prompted the police to further investigate the incident.

The former president also said that the attacker also broke the personal space of the former first lady by getting too close.

Dr. Waheed said that it is sad to see that the Speaker of the parliament and MPs whose function is to legislate and upload the law can easily ask the public to break it and harass him.
