Speaker of the parliament Mohamed Nasheed has met chairs of the parliamentary committees.

The meeting took place at the parliamentary secretariat office. The parliamentary secretariat has not divulged the details of the meeting yet.

The Speaker had met the chairs of the parliamentary committees previously. He is regularly briefed on the work carried out by the parliamentary committees.

The 19th parliament has 24 committees to oversee various sectors of the state and nation. This includes the general-purpose Committee, Public Accounts Committee, government oversight committee as well as the committee on national development and heritage and petitions committee.

Earlier this week, the parliament carried out important legislative work by approving the Fifth Amendment to the constitution and thus extending the term of the current local councilors thereby avoiding a legal vacuum.

The amendment was passed at a parliamentary sitting held in the early hours of Tuesday and was approved by the vote from 74 MPs.
