National Emergency Operations Center NEOC Spokesperson Mohamed Mabrook Azeez says a foreigner found dead on the streets of Male’ have tested positive for Covid-19.

Speaking to the media, Mabrook clarified that the Bangladeshi national was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital after being found unconscious on the streets last night and was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Mabrook said the individual was tested for Covid-19 at the hospital and that the result came back positive for the virus.

It means this is the 5th person to die of Covid-19 in the Maldives.

Mabrook also said that the deceased person worked with a local but had not reported for work in two months. He said the person is said to suffer from heart problems and did not show any symptoms of Covid-19.

Mabrook also said that contact tracing for the individual was ongoing and that 4 people have already been identified as contacts.

He said the deceased lived with other Bangladeshi nationals but their house is not a containment site under the surveillance of the Health Protection Agency.

In April, another Foreigner was also found dead on the streets of Male’ just after the community spread of the virus was confirmed. But NEOC later explained that the person died of natural causes and was not regarded as a Covid-19 death.
