Teachers taking accommodation at the Edhuru Hiya flats have expressed concern over no responses from Maldives President regarding their plea.

According to several local teachers, who have taken abode at the apartment complex developed exclusively for teachers, they had submitted a petition to Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih requesting for a rent slice on their flats.

The apartment complex has a total of 80 apartments, of which 75 were designated for local teachers with the remaining five designated for Ministry of Education. The complex was developed during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration.

Teachers living at the complex, have borne their signature of the petition requesting either for a rent leniency or a temporary exemption amid the economic crisis due to persisting Covid-19 pandemic.

The petition was reportedly signed 65 teachers and presented to Maldives statesman.

Rents of apartments in the complex are MVR6000, which is affordable under normal circumstances. However, several teachers have complained their income have constrained due to the prolonging pandemic.

Many local teachers complained their standard income had always been significantly lower, while making additional income through tuitions.

Meanwhile it was reported several teachers have been unable to settle rents for the previous two months while they have been warned of a MVR50 fine for everday past rent deadline.
