Maldives National Defense Force MNDF says five of its officers have tested positive for Covid-19 as the risk for frontline workers becomes greater with the rapid spread of the virus.

Speaking to the media, Facility Manager Colonel Hussain Ali said although he could not reveal how many officers have been isolated after showing symptoms of Covid-19, he can confirm that 5 MNDF officers have now contracted the virus.

The Colonel did not detail how the officers got infected with the virus but said MNDF officers were working at the frontlines of the fight against the global pandemic.

He said MNDF was working tirelessly to change the current situation and they remained away from their families to achieve this purpose.

Meanwhile, speaking at the same press briefing, Tourism Minister Ali Waheed said MNDF officers have been working away from their families for the past three weeks, and like them all those working on the frontline of the crisis were striving to change the current predicament.

A total of 220 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the Maldives including locals and foreigners.
