Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed says Maldives Police Services will take criminal action against individuals who spread false information about the Covid-19 crisis.

In a tweet, Commissioner Hameed said individuals who spread false news during the current crisis serve no legitmate purpose in the community. He said instead such individuals create fear and panic among the public.

Commissioner Hameed also said police will take criminal action against individuals who publicly harass or annoy persons with false accusations or misinformation pertaining to Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

He said the objective is to protect the dignity and privacy of all during these trying times.

This comes after Health Protection Agency HPA said that some individuals were sharing images of positive cases in the country and that criminal action would be taken against such individuals.
