Maldives government has presented to parliament, requesting the postponing of local council elections until the current State of Public Emergency prevailing in the island nation is lifted.

The government has presented bill with the preposition to postpone the much anticipated elections in light of the COVID-19 viral pandemic due which state is exercising strict preventive measures in the country.

Presented to parliament from Attorney General's Office on behalf of Maldives state, cites the approval and implementation of the bill will postpone the local council elections scheduled for 18 April 2020, accordingly.

Moreover, the bill further cites the Elections Commission must resume local council elections once the state authorities have confirmed any activities related to the event once public safety with regards to the virus, has been ensured.

The provisions stated in the bill further cites the local council elections must be held latest before 06 January 2021.

State's decision to push back the elections is to further ensure the efforts in flattening the curve on the COVID-19 viral outbreak, remains effective.
