Labor Relations Authority has urged Maldivian employers to adhere to the Employment Act during the current Covid-19 crisis.

In a statement Labour Relations Authority said it has come to their attention that some employers were dismissing, altering wages and imposing no pay leaves on employees due to the economic impact of Covid-19. The statement said some of these actions were taken against the Employment Act.

It said the government of Maldives has decided to introduce a stimulus package of financial aid in order to support employers to face challenges arising from the economic impact of Covid-19. The authority said in granting of these aid, priority will be given to employers who refrain from dismissing employees during this time and abide by the Employments Act by the granting the rights reserved for employees.

In it’s statement the Authority urges employers to communicate with it before making any decisions related to the employment status of employees and not takes any actions against the Employments Act.

Meanwhile Officials Spokesman for Covid-19 related updates in Maldives Mr. Mabrouk Azeez today said that employees who wish to file grievances could do so using the online platform Jobcenter.mv.

Speaking to the media, he said some have already registered their complaints on the website and urged others to all file their complains.

The fight against Covid-19 is set to have a lasting effect on the country’s economy with the Country’s main sectors brought to an absolute standstill.
