President Ibrahim Mohamed solih says Maldives is effectively under a lockdown to quell further spread of global pandemic Covid-19.

Speaking to the media President Solih said flights won't be allowed into Maldivian air space within 24 hours and that tourists in the country are not allowed to travel within the country.

President said that Maldives was already under lock down and did not believe any further restrictions can be implemented.

He said the government was ready for the worst-case scenario and it is working tirelessly to ensure basic necessities to all Maldivians. He added that this included food, electricity, communication services as well as transport services.

In today’s press briefing President Solih said government will cease issuing on arrival visas to foreigners starting this Friday.
