The Maldives executive, inclusive of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Vice President Faisal Naseem, along with the cabinet of ministers have approved to slice their salaries by 20%.

The decision also includes the Maldives parliament, inclusive of all lawmakers.

Maldives government inclusive of its executive and legislature stepped up to unanimously approve on reducing their salaries in light of the rapidly spreading COVID-19 virus.

While the Maldives government earlier announced a State of Public Health Emergency, the government later announced on temporarily closing all state institutions.

Moreover, the parliamentary sessions have also been temporarily halted for a week's duration which was announced during Wednesday's, 18 March 2020, parliamentary session by it's Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

The government has decided on slicing the salaries on all public officials with a basic salary of MVR30,000 and above by 20% in a bid to save state expenses.

Several strict precautionary steps have been undertaken by the Maldives government to ensure control of the COVID-19 viral pandemic, which has already traveled to the island nation.

Though no locals have been reported with the infection, the island nation currently holds 13 foreigners in various isolation treatment facilities who were discovered positive for the virus.
