The Maldives Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced tourists arriving to the island nation are now restricted to transfers to their booked resorts.

The strict travel restriction for in-bound transfers have been placed in light of the rapidly spreading COVID-19 virus, of which the island nation confirms 13 positive cases.

The President's Office Under Secretary and the official spokesperson on COVID-19 developments, Mr Mabrouk Abdul Azeez on Monday confirmed foreign travelers and holidaymakers are now restricted from visiting locally inhabited islands through the use ferries and other domestic transfer systems.

Holidaymakers will be directly transferred to their booked tourist resorts following screening at the Velana International Airport (VIA). The travelers will be under constant monitoring during their stay to check for the possible presence of the virus.

Moreover, the President's Office Under Secretary detailed travelers who become suspected with symptoms of the virus will be isolated for screening and testing.

The Maldives has imposed travel restrictions on China, Bangladesh, Iran, Italy, Span, two provinces of South Korea, three areas from Germany and two areas from France.
