The economic committee of Maldives Parliament has decided to come to a conclusion on the minimum wage for local working class.

The report formed through research and survey conducted by the designated board on minimum wage, under the administration of Ministry of Economic Development had presented its findings to the parliament in early February.

Dhuvaafaru constituency lawmaker Ismail Ahmed, who sits at the economic committee of the parliament noted the report was thoroughly researched by the relevant ministry and thus reduces the committee's work.

The lawmaker's implication was towards a quick decision from the parliament on the matter.

MP Ismail Ahmed suggested to arrive a definite conclusion before 11 March 2020, by the economic committee which was agreed by North-Fuvahmulah MP Mohamed Rasheed, who also sits at the committee.

While the economic committee holds eight lawmakers, four were in favor of a concluding decision for minimum wage before the scheduled date. The decision was approved by the vote from the committee's chair.

Though the majority of the committee has pushed ahead with a conclusive decision for the matter before 11 March, opposition members had a dissenting opinion.

The parliament opposition claims substantial time is required to conduct a research of their own before arriving to a conclusion. According to the former Minister of Economic Development and current Maavashu MP Mohamed Saeed, the ministry's report raises several questions that needs to be answered.
