The former President of Maldives Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was transferred by Maldives Correctional Service on Wednesday morning to Male' City for medical appointment.
The imprisoned former head of state was transferred to Maldives capital to consult a heart specialist due to his continued ailment.
Ex-President Yameen Abdul Gayoom was diagnozed with a cardiac-related condition as well as spinal complexities.
Moreover, the former Maldives President revealed he had sustained various degrees of physical and mental injuries. Yameen made the revelation in 28 January 2020.
According to the now imprisoned former statesman, doctors have advised him to opt for a 'destressing' environment. Furthermore doctos had advised him specialized therapy from abroad.
Meanwhile, Yameen Abdul Gayoom's advocate, the former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed criticized local law enforcement and the state claiming the jail cell where the former statesman is incarcerated, was beyond any condition for a human to live in.
Furthermore, Dr. Jameel argued to release Yameen Abdul Gayoom from penitentiary into his residence, while continuing his appeal case at the appellate court.
Meanwhile, Maldives High Court in 6 February respected Criminal Court's sentence refusing for a repeal.
The appellate court sentenced the former statesman will not be granted bail and provision for leniency was unapplicable over the conviction of money laundering.
Maldives Criminal Court found the former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom guilty of money laundering, sentencing him to a rigorous imprisonment for a five-year period with a fine of USD5 million.
Criminal Court ordered the convicted ex-President to settle the fine within six months of sentencing.
