The Maldives Minister of Economic Development has claimed the minimum wage standards will be publicly announced before the end of February 2020.
Minister Fayyaz Ismail in a tweet claimed the methodology of the minimum wage and the actual minimum wage amount will be announced after proper consultation.
"The declaration of the minimum wage for the first time is not related to amendment to the Employment Act," Minister Fayyaz added to his tweet.
The minimum wage will be set based on the Maldives Employment Act, contrary to the notion that the Act is amended for the inclusion of a minimum wage provision.
Earlier, International Labor Organization (ILO) had disclosed its findings to the ministry regarding the research conducted on the necessary aspects with regards to the minimum wage in Maldives.
Meanwhile Minister Fayyaz has commented the implementation of a minimum wage will impact the country's economy and will bring about lasting changes to the socio-economic structure.
Thus, the Economic Minister ensured that a final decision on the matter will not be arrived without gathering public opinion on it.
The Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on 03 February confirmed the bill on minimum wage will be presented to the parliament for deliberation.
A special "Minimum Wage Board" for formed under the Constitutional rights vested to the President, to advise him on the issue.
The board had presented its findings to the Maldives President on 07 January.
While the Minister of Economic Development has ensured an official announcement of the matter, minimum wage remains one of the key pledges by the incumbent head of state made during the presidential campaign.
