The Maldives Ministry of Health confirms they will disestablish Hithadhoo Regional Hospital.

The decision comes on top of the ministry's move on institutionalizing Addu Equitorial Hospital as a tertiary medical venue.

With this, the staff of Hithadhoo Regional Hospital will be tranferred under the management of the Addu Equitorial Hospital - without the loss of their employment.

The new Addu Equitorial Hospital will reportedly employ all the standard and latest in medical equipment, transferred from Hithadhoo Regional Hospital.

Although the new tertiary medical institute was slated to officially open on 15 December. However, due to outstanding work in preparing the institute the opening date has been pushed back.

Until the tertiary medical institution opens on official capacity, medical services will be rendered from Hithadhoo Regional Hospital.

According to Ministry of Health, the Addu Equitorial Hospital employs 25 specialist doctors, 11 medical officers and 73 nurses.

Previously the Addu Convention Center stood at the spot of the Addu Equitorial Hospital, which went through major renovation and transformation under the project's contractor Alia Construction.

The project contractor completed and handed over the new building to the government on November 2016.
