Home Minister Ali Ihusan says the government has assisted a mother and her daughter in returning home to the Maldives after they left war-torn Syria.

At a press conference today, the Minister said there are rules and regulations for bringing back locals who go to fight wars in other countries and that the government has been granting permission for them to return as per these regulations.

He also said that the law states that such persons cannot be released to society until they have completed three months of rehabilitation, and that the Ministry has been acting as per the law.

Minister Ihusan said that the government is working to bring home 60 locals who are currently stuck in two regions in the war-torn Syria. He also noted that the government is working to bring back locals stuck in other war-torn areas.

He explained that Turkish authorities had detained a Maldivian mother and her child after they had entered the country following their escape from a war-zone. He said that the Turkish authorities had notified their Maldivian counterparts of the duo's detention in Turkey.

The Minister announced that the mother and her 14-year-old daughter had now been brought back to the Maldives and that they are undergoing rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation for repatriated locals from war-torn countries is a must under the Terrorism Act if they fail their risk assessment upon their return.
