The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has stated that it will take action against online platforms selling medicines without authorization.

The MNDF issued an announcement today saying that medicines can be imported and sold commercially only if they are registered as an importer and seller of medication with the authority in accordance with the Guidelines on Medicines.

It also said that all imported drugs must be registered in accordance with the rules and included in the list of drugs authorized to be imported and sold in the Maldives.

However, the authority said that it has noticed that drugs used for various purposes are being imported and sold on various online pages without obtaining the required permits.

The MFDA also found that pages fraudulently claimed that semaglutide, used to lower blood sugar levels, is a weight-loss drug, and azaleic acid, used for skin problems, is a facial skin brightener.

It further said that Pharmacies can also dispense such drugs only on prescription, and taking such drugs without the advice and guidance of a doctor can lead to unexpected tragedy.

MFDA added that it will continue to take action against those who import, sell, and advertise drugs without obtaining the required permission.
