Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday welcomed US President Donald Trump’s newly unveiled plan to end the Gaza conflict, describing it as a “viable pathway” to sustainable peace in West Asia.
“We welcome President Donald J. Trump’s announcement of a comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict. It provides a viable pathway to long-term and sustainable peace, security and development for the Palestinian and Israeli people, as well as for the broader West Asian region. We hope all concerned will come together behind this initiative and support this effort to end conflict and secure peace,” Modi said in a post on X, tagging both Trump and the US President’s official accounts.
The conflict in Gaza, triggered by Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attacks that killed 1,200 people and saw 250 taken hostage, has since claimed more than 66,000 lives.
Trump’s plan, detailed in a 20-point White House document, calls for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israel, a phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and Hamas’ complete disarmament. A transitional government led by an international body would administer Gaza, with Hamas excluded from governance.
Under the proposal, Hamas would release its remaining 48 hostages within 72 hours—20 of whom are believed to be alive—in exchange for Israel freeing 250 Palestinians serving life sentences and 1,700 detainees from Gaza, including all women and children. Israel would also return the bodies of 15 Palestinians for every hostage’s body handed over.
Israeli forces would withdraw in stages, replaced by an international security force tasked with overseeing disarmament, maintaining order, and training Palestinian police. Members of Hamas pledging peaceful conduct would be granted amnesty, while those wishing to leave Gaza would be allowed to do so.
The plan also envisions large-scale humanitarian aid deliveries, coordinated by neutral bodies such as the UN and the Red Crescent.
Gaza’s governance during the transition would rest with a technocratic Palestinian committee supervised by a newly formed ‘Board of Peace’, chaired by Trump and including international leaders and experts, such as former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. The committee, comprising qualified Palestinians and international specialists, would oversee daily governance and public services. (Source: IE)
