The defence of Raud Ahmed Zilal has appealed his remand order from the Criminal Court to the High Court.
Raud was arrested last month in the case that has captured the attention of the country, where a 21-year-old woman was found on the rooftop of a house in Male'.
Raud, who was last seen with the victim Hawwa Yumn, was arrested on the 24th of last month. Since then, the Criminal Court has remanded him in custody four times.
He was initially remanded for five days and then for another ten days after the first five days were over. In his third hearing, the Criminal Court remanded him in custody for another five days. On the 15th of this month, Raud was remanded once again, and that time, he was remanded for 20 days.
His defence is contesting the remand order of five days issued on the 10th of this month. His lawyers have highlighted five reasons for the appeal, including the mistake by the Police when they cited the wrong article by mistake when moving to extend his remand, and then again citing the wrong article to change their stand.
Also, the judge in the remand session himself referred to an article that was not submitted by the two litigants. The appeal also highlighted that the remand was given contrary to the article referred to by the Judge and the raising of the proportion of evidence, even if no new evidence was submitted.
The High Court is yet to decide whether or not it would hear the appeal case.
