Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his two-day visit to Saudi Arabia, hailed the kingdom as “one of India’s most valued partners — a maritime neighbour, a trusted friend, and a strategic ally,” emphasizing the “limitless potential” of the growing partnership between the two nations.

Modi is scheduled to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah on Tuesday night, where both leaders will explore avenues to expand cooperation in critical sectors such as energy, defence, and trade. They are also expected to discuss the progress of Riyadh’s proposed $100 billion investment in India.

The meeting will also cover regional and global developments, with a particular focus on the broader West Asia landscape.

“This marks my third visit to Saudi Arabia over the past decade and my first to the historic city of Jeddah,” Modi said. “I look forward to participating in the second meeting of the Strategic Partnership Council and continuing the momentum from the successful state visit of my brother, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to India in 2023.”

In a symbolic gesture of welcome, Modi’s aircraft was escorted by F-15 fighter jets of the Royal Saudi Air Force upon entering Saudi airspace.

In an interview with Arab News, Modi spoke of the deep-rooted ties between India and Saudi Arabia, shaped by centuries of civilisational and cultural exchanges. “Our connection is not new. From ideas to trade, there has been a constant flow between our two great nations. The formation of the Strategic Partnership Council in 2019 was a major milestone, and our collaboration since then has grown across numerous sectors. This is just the beginning—our partnership has limitless potential,” he said.

The Prime Minister underscored mutual trust and goodwill as the foundation of the bilateral relationship. “In a world of uncertainties, the bond between India and Saudi Arabia stands as a pillar of stability,” he remarked. “These are truly promising times for our partnership, and I deeply appreciate the role Saudi leadership has played in strengthening it.”

Modi also praised Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s vision and leadership, noting the Crown Prince’s forward-thinking approach and his role in transforming Saudi Arabia’s socio-economic landscape. “His insights and commitment to his people’s aspirations have left a deep impression on me,” he said. Modi emphasized the “personal warmth and trust” they share, calling it a vital factor in the prioritization of bilateral ties.

“Our conversations are always focused on making this partnership future-ready,” Modi added. “Jeddah, with its historic connection to India, has long been a hub of trade and people-to-people ties. For centuries, Indian pilgrims have passed through its lanes en route to Hajj and Umrah.”

Reflecting on the economic relationship, Modi likened it to the ancient monsoon winds that once powered maritime trade between the two regions. “Despite global challenges, our trade ties have not only survived but thrived. Energy, agriculture, and fertilisers remain key areas of exchange, but diversification efforts are also bearing fruit. Indian businesses and Saudi industries are increasingly building stronger bonds.”

He also highlighted mutual contributions in key sectors: “Saudi Arabia is one of India’s foremost energy partners, while India contributes to Saudi Arabia’s food security. I’ve even heard that Saudi citizens have a preference for Indian rice, just as we enjoy Saudi dates.”

Modi identified strong synergies between Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 development agenda. Bilateral investments are on the rise, with Indian firms playing active roles in Saudi Arabia’s transformation. “Today, India’s growth story presents exciting opportunities—from the space economy to global supply chain collaborations. Our goal is to deepen this partnership,” he said.

The two countries are currently working toward a bilateral investment treaty, and Modi expressed optimism about the proposed Free Trade Agreement between India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), calling it a game-changer for regional economic ties.

He concluded by inviting Saudi businesses to participate in India’s development journey. “There are remarkable opportunities in sectors like next-generation infrastructure, renewable energy, healthcare, innovation, and the blue economy. Strengthening collaborations between Indian and Saudi companies will play a pivotal role in advancing our shared vision for progress.”
