The Male' City Council has decided to seek public opinion on reducing the traffic in the highly-congested Male' City.
The decision was taken at a meeting held by the Council today after discussing the findings of a study conducted by the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) to determine the number of road vehicle registrations and the duration of vehicle use in the Male' area.
IUM was commissioned to compile the report last August.
According to the report, there are currently 199,472 vehicles in the city, but the roads and other facilities allow for 89,000 vehicles.
Speaking at the meeting, Councillor for Galolhu North Constituency Saif Fathih said as per the report the number of vehicles used in the city should be reduced to 25 percent.
He pointed out that it would be difficult to reduce the number of vehicles being driven in the city suddenly and that it was vital to seek public opinion on the matter.
Speaking at the meeting, Male' City Mayor Adam Azim, said that there should be a clear plan to do this and that it would be easier to compile such a plan after taking into account public opinion.
With this, the Council decided to publish the report and moved to open the matter to public opinion for a period of two weeks.
