The First Lady, Saajidha Mohamed, has announced that she intends to pursue civil charges against two individuals and the main opposition party, MDP, over comments about the First Couple's 16-year-old son.
In a press conference held at the First Couple's residence in Dhimyath, their lawyer and former Attorney General Azima Shukoor read a statement on behalf of the President's family, which the First Lady signed off on.
In the statement, First Lady Sajidha said that over the past year, especially in the last few days, untrue and false stories have been made about her son, Umair Mohammed Muizzu, and spread through the media and social media platforms.
She said that the false stories include saying that Umair is using vape, which has been banned in the country by the President in the last year. She further said that her son has never smoked in his life and that she can say this with certainty.
The First Lady said that these stories have been spread by people who oppose her husband, President Muizzu's political views.
The First Lady said these individuals have now begun to target her eldest child and her youngest child, who is only 8, to bully and harass them, which she finds unacceptable.
Sajidha said that her lawyers would give more details about the course of action she wishes to take and that she is pursuing these actions as a mother who wants to see a safer environment for all children.
After reading the statement, the First Family's lawyer Azima said that they would be pursuing civil charges against MDP, MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, and MDP Activist Mariyam Zubair (Mandhy).
She also said that they are working to file charges as soon as next week.
