Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has warned that the country is heading toward an authoritarian regime after the Parliament approved an amendment to the Judicature Act, which slashed the number of judges on the Supreme Court bench.
In a post on X, the former President said that today, the country is seeing a constitutional case in the Supreme Court, the government initiated direct political influence, the independence of all institutions, intimidation of judges, and very uncivilized and ugly acts.
He called on the authorities to stop these practices and return to the rule of law.
President Solih also said that the country is heading towards an authoritarian regime. He said that the rights all have gained through the hard work of many people are in danger ,and so is a governmental system where all three powers are separated.
Solih said that all this is being done so that the President has total control and that the Maldivian people will bear the bitter consequences of these practices.
