The Parliament has thrown out the emergency motion filed by the MP for Galolhu South Constituency Meekail Ahmed Naseem calling on the parliament to cease the work on the amendment to the Courts Act seeking to reduce the Supreme Court bench from 7 to 5 judges.
Speaker of the Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdullah said that MP Meekail's motion was about a potential debate of an amendment proposed to the parliament and that the motion does not meet the conditions of a motion.
While submitting the motion, MP Meekail said that the Supreme Court judges are facing code of conduct investigations and that these were to influence and intimidate the judges.
He also said that the amendment proposed by the MP for Holhudhoo Constituency Abdul Sattar Mohamed was only in retaliation against the top court's decision to move forward on the case about the legality of an amendment brought to the constitution which was orchestrated by the government.
The MP said if the proposed amendment is passed, the three-tier system established by the Constitution will collapse and all powers of the state will be transferred to the government, adding that the reduction in the number of Supreme Court judges will slow down the hearing of cases.
