The Family Court has told a parliamentary committee that it has in its docket the case of a local woman who has three husbands because she has failed to register her marriages at the Court.
The Parliament's Committee on Secondary Legislation today expressed concerns over cases of locals marrying in foreign countries without giving child support and the rise of out-of-court marriages.
Replying to questions from members, Family Court Legal Officer Ahmed Mausoom said it has been noticed that some Maldivians go abroad to get married to escape the rules and laws imposed in the country.
He said that in one such case, one local woman has three husbands. He further explained that the woman got married abroad and once failed to register the marriage in the Maldives, abandoned the marriage, and got married for the second time.
The legal officer said that this has been repeated three times by the same woman and the court has documents on her marriages.
Mausoom said this would lead to genealogical confusion and undesirable things in society.
He said that Maldivians must get permission from the family court to get married or get divorced in foreign countries, but many fail to do so.
Maumoon insisted that the Family Court allows Maldivians to marry abroad only if all the conditions are met.
He added that added that there are more such cases and the High Court is also investigating a case.
