Immigration says it has found 9 foreigners who fled from Male' City to the northern city of Kulhudhufushi because of the recent crackdown on illegal migrants in the capital.
Immigration said that it had been receiving reports of illegal immigrants leaving the city and going to different parts of the country. It said that they raided a vessel carrying passengers to Kulhudhufushi based on such reports.
They said that the raid was carried out with the assistance of Police and Kulhudhufushi City Council officials. Immigration noted that they found 9 illegal immigrants trying to flee to Kulhudhufushi and that they were given notices to appear before Immigration.
It also said that the captain of the boat advised against his action in writing.
Immigration added that action will be taken against these persons under the Immigration Act if they do not comply with the order.
The crackdown in the Greater Male' Area is forcing illegal immigrants to flee to other parts of the country to evade authorities who are detaining undocumented migrants.
