Veteran footballer Mohamed Arif (Bakaa) has succumbed to the sudden illness he was under treatment for at ADK ICU.

The 38-year-old who returned to the Maldives after performing Hajj rituals a few days back was admitted to the hospital for having a fever and then breathing difficulties.

The hospital confirmed that he was shifted to the ICU yesterday as his condition did not improve. A media official at the hospital confirms that the former footballer remains in the ICU and that he is still in serious condition.

A friend of the family has confirmed to the Press that the legendary footballer has passed away while under treatment in ICU of the hospital.

The former footballer performed Hajj rituals as a special guest of the Saudi King.

Arif, known for his ball-winning abilities in the heart of the Maldivian midfield, played a pivotal role when the country lifted its first regional trophy back in 2008.

He also played a key part when the country won the SAFF Championship again in 2018. His last club appearance came for United Victory of the first division in the Maldivian league.
