Finance Minister Dr. Mohamed Shafeeq has decided against holding a closed-door hearing at the Parliament's Public Accounts Committee to explain the financial situation of the country.
A committee hearing to ascertain the financial situation of the country was held yesterday with the Minister also invited to the hearing. However, he was unable to attend as he was on sick leave.
Speaking at the meeting yesterday, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament and MP for Dhiggaru Constituency Ahmed Nazim said since the issue is a sensitive matter, the Minister wanted to hold the hearing behind closed doors.
He went on to say that the hearing on the information given to the Committee would be held in secret. The matter was then put to a vote in which 7 members of the Committee also supported holding the hearing in secret.
However, the Minister has now decided against a closed-door hearing for tomorrow's committee meeting in which he is likely to reveal the financial situation of the country to the Parliament Committee. This also means the media as well as members of the public can view the hearing through the Parliament's online broadcasting forums.
The Deputy Speaker of the Parliament MP Nazim has said before that the government needs to explain the financial situation of the country to its people and prepare them in case they need to 'take any bitter medicine' to cope with the situation.
