The 93 MPs of the 20th Parliament have taken their oaths of Office today.
At a ceremony held earlier today, the oath was administered by Chief Justice Muthasim Adnan. The 20th Majlis then held its first session with the election of its Speaker and Deputy Speaker on the agenda.
Long-standing Parliamentarian, the MP for Meedhoo Constituency Ahmed Siyam Mohamed chaired the session.
Out of the 93 MPs sworn in today, 73 MPs represent the ruling PNC who took most of the seats in the Parliamentary elections held last month.
Initially, PNC won 66 out of the 90 seats it had competed in the election while the main opposition party MDP only won 12 seats, a major downfall to the party that had held the supermajority in the 19th Parliament.
However, out of the 11 independent candidates that won seats in the election, 9 later signed for PNC taking its total seats to a staggering 75.
PNC is likely to win the posts of parliament speaker and Deputy speaker because of its overwhelming representation in the 20th Parliament.
