Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Khaleel says authorities will soon begin testing food imports into the Maldives for chemicals and ensure their safety.
He announced this at the press conference held today by the Health Ministry.
The Minister said that the Ministry was making arrangements that would enable officials to take samples of food imports like vegetables and fruits to test for chemicals.
Noting that chemicals are also used in farming in the Maldives, the Minister said chemical testing of these produce was not done adequately. Minister Khaleel said that authorities are looking at different ways to collect samples and test these products and that if the samples have to be sent abroad for testing, then those arrangements would also be made.
Minister Khlaleel said the implementation of food safety policies will encourage importers to import food safely by knowing the level of hazardous substances in the products.
