Former President and Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has congratulated President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for the winning supermajority of the 20th Parliament.
President Muizzu's PNC secured 71 seats of the 20th Parliament in the elections after competing for 90 of the 93 seats in the parliament which also means that the ruling PNC has now secured a Parliamentary supermajority.
In a post on X, Nasheed congratulated President Muizzu, PNC leadership, and its members for the party's complete victory in yesterday's election.
Nasheed's message to the President comes as his party the Democrats reels from the compounding defeat in the polls. The democrats fielded candidates for 39 constituencies but failed to win even one seat on the 20th parliament.
This means veteran MPs like Eva Abdullah, Imthiyaz Fahmy, and Ali Azim would not be representing their constituencies in the 20th Parliament.
The main opposition party MDP who held the supermajority in the last parliament only won 12 out of the 89 seats it had competed in. While MDA won two seats, MNP and Jumhooree Party only managed to secure just one seat in the parliament.
Six out of the 130 independent candidates also won in yesterday's election.
