Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon says Indian troops stormed local fishing vessels due to a miscommunication.
He said this while answering a question from the MP for Thinadhoo South Constituency, Abdullah Saneef, at the Parliament today. MP Saneef asked for clarification about the incident.
Minister Ghassan said official sources had informed him that the day's boarding activity was due to a miscommunication and that the Maldivian coast guard had not given the information.
He also said that the Indian troops boarded the vessels, citing that the locals were using satellite phones. Ghassan said the phone was banned from being used within Indian territory due to a change in the country's regulations. He said fishermen must use the phone if they go outside a specific area. He added that local fishermen comply with the laws.
