President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu says legal efforts are already underway to end the indefinite detention of suspects arrested for alleged crimes.

He said this while answering a question from a member of the public who asked the President about such long-term detentions. The President has been answering daily video questions from regular citizens.

Nasheedha Hassan of Meemu Mulak said in her question to the President that she became hopeful after President Muizzu pledged an end to such detentions as her husband has been detained under indefinite detention for the last two years.

Nasheed recounted that she has been struggling to get by without her husband's support as she is taking care of four children and one of the children has a disability.

She said that witness statements and other evidence showed that her jailed husband was innocent.

In response, President Muizzu said that this was a very important question and that ending indefinite detention was one of the most important pledges he had made.

The President said that efforts are already underway to bring amendments required by the law and other legal avenues. President said that authorities are working to streamline criminal investigative procedures and that this would bring a permanent solution to the indefinite detention issue.

During his presidential campaign, President Muizzu promised to abolish indefinite detention and bring about changes that would require only a 48-hour detention for suspects.
