President of the Elections Commission Fuwad Thaufeeq says if the Parliamentary Election is delayed beyond the 21st of April, there is a high chance that the new parliament might not be elected before the term of the current parliament expires.
In a post on X, Fuwad said that the Law states that the new parliament must be elected once before the sitting parliamentarians complete their term and if the election is held beyond the 21st of April, this requirement might not be met.
He further said that the Parliamentary Election has been postponed to the 21st of April because it is the day that comes 10 days after the completion of the Holy month of Ramadan.
The Parliament had approved an amendment to the Elections Act to prevent having the Election during Ramadan as initially scheduled by the Commission.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu ratified the bill last Thursday and the elections Commission announced that it would hold the Election on the 21st of April which is a Sunday.
This drew criticism from former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as elections are regularly held on a public holiday. The former President accused President Muizzu of using his influence to table the elections on a non-holiday.
