The Parliament has said that it had received a motion to dismiss the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, MP for the Dhiggaru Constituency, Ahmed Nazim.

It said that the matter will be prosecuted in accordance with the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament.

According to the rules of the House, the Deputy Speaker of the House can resign in two circumstances.

It is when the member resigns from the membership or the Parliament passes a resolution to remove him from office.

At a meeting in which such a resolution is debated, a person proposed for removal shall have the right to attend and speak in his own defence. However, he will not be able to participate in the vote on the matter.

Yesterday, Local media reported that PNC MPs have gathered enough signatures to impeach the Deputy Speaker. At least 24 MPs are needed to move a resolution to impeach the Vice-President of Parliament.

Out of the 93 sitting MPs, 76 are from the ruling PNC.

Only Parliamentarians who attend the session to impeach Nazim can participate in the vote.

This comes amid a rift between Nazim and the PNC leadership. It was also reported that he had been removed from the official WatsApp group of the PNC Parliamentary group.
