The main opposition party MDP declares former Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid as the new President of the party.

In a public announcement today, the party said that only the former Minister applied for the post of party president when it opened applications for the presidency from last Tuesday to today.

Though it had scheduled an election for next month, MDP said that it had now declared Shahid as the President of the party.

Shahid takes over from former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih who took up the role last November when elected party president Mohamed Nasheed resigned from the party.

The former President is a career diplomat with notable roles in local politics as well as the international arena.

He served as President of the 76th United Nations General Assembly between 2021 and 2022. He was also the Speaker of the Parliament from 2009 to 2014.
