President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Maldives would begin 24-hour surveillance of its Exclusive Economic Zone EEZ.
He made this announcement during his first Presidential Address to the Parliament today.
In his address, the President touched on how historic leaders of the country defended the nation's security by strengthening its military to fend off attacks from other countries.
President Muizzu said that he believed the Maldivian military should strengthen its airforce, army, and naval forces. He said that the government has now begun this work.
He went on to say that the Maldivian military would soon have the capability to begin 24-hour surveillance of its vast Exclusive Economic Zone.
The President reaffirmed that he and his government would always implement a pro-Maldives policy to protect the rights and interests of the nation.
The announcement of 24-hour surveillance of Maldivian waters after reports emerged last week that Indian troops stormed several Maldivian fishing vessels inside Maldivian waters.
The Defense Ministry have since confirmed these reports and have asked its Indian counterparts for an explanation on their actions.
