The Family Court has scrapped the MVR 25 fee it takes to issue protective orders in domestic violence cases.

This was confirmed by the Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem on his blog. Shameem said that all the relevant agencies felt that it was needless to make victims pay MVR 25 for a Domestic Violence Protective Order DVPO and that he had spoken in support of dropping the fee.

Shameem said that the fee should be paid via the government's Bandeyri Portal and that this would require internet and other resources. He said that the victim who seeks a DVPO must be in a precarious situation and that all the agencies felt that the victim should not have to pay a fee for protection.

He said once the issue of the MVR 25 came to the attention of the Family Court, the Judge's Council decided to scrap the fee. He said that this went into effect in the new Judicial year.

Last Thursday, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the 'Judicial Year 2024' at a special ceremony attended by the Chief Justice of the Maldives, along with senior members of the Judiciary and senior government officials.

One of the most important objectives of the inauguration ceremony of the judicial year is to set new goals for the upcoming year and reflect on the achievements of the judiciary over the past year.
