The Prosecutor General's Office has charged the Sri Lankan woman who allegedly dumped her newborn baby at the dump yard in Alif Dhaalu Dhigurah.
The newborn was found in a plastic bag thrown at the dump yard last month and authorities confirmed that the baby was dead when it was found.
Local authorities arrested a 30-year-old Sri Lankan named Hiranya Kumudumali de Alwis who is believed to be the mother of the newborn on the same day from Velaana International Airport as she attempted to flee the country.
Today, the Prosecutor General's Office said that it had pressed three separate charges against the suspect including murder with intent.
Alwis has also been charged with endangering the health and well-being of a child despite being responsible for the child as well as concealing the death of a person.
The suspect is believed to have given birth to her child sometime between 10:00 p.m. on December 1st and 05:00 am on December 3rd in the bathroom of a house in Dhigurah.
Authorities said that Alwis had then picked up her newborn baby, placed her in a plastic bag, and dumped the bag in a dustbin for biodegradable waste placed on a street in Dhigurah.
The suspect remains under custody and could face 28 years in jail if found guilty of her crimes.
