President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu says the government plans to widen the abroad treatment options covered by the national health insurance scheme Aasandha.
Speaking to the media following his state visit to China, President Muizzu said that the government has made plans to revamp the Aasandha scheme in a way that it does not limit the abroad options for treatment just to the medical facilities in a certain country.
President Muizzu said that the government plans to expand the abroad options to UAE and Thailand and make sure to include accommodation expenses within the Aasandha coverage.
He explained that this would mean Maldivians can go to more developed countries for their medical needs including Dubai and Bangkok till the Maldivian healthcare system is fully developed to address their needs locally.
Currently, Aasandha covers abroad treatment at medical facilities mostly in Indian cities. Hundreds of Maldivians go to India annually for medical needs and spend millions on medical treatment at Indian cities like Bangalore and Kochi.
