President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has attacked the India-first policy of the previous government insisting that a foreign power was allowed to intervene in internal matters to a worrying extent.
Speaking to the media following his state visit to China, President Muizzu said that the historic relationship between the Maldives and China was based on 4 key principles and that one such principle is non-interference in internal matters.
The President said that China would not interfere with the internal matters of the Maldives.
President Muizzu said that during the days of the former government, Maldives could only move from one seat to another with permission from a certain party and that the Maldivian people did not want this.
He said that the bad practice of interfering with internal affairs should not be allowed within the bilateral relationships between two countries.
The President listed the other three principles as mutual respect between the two countries, sovereign equality, and territorial integrity.
President Muizzu detailed plans to revamp key national services now solely based on India including Aasandha services, pharmaceutical services and the importing of staple food materials to avoid being dependent on just one country.
