Former President Mohamed Nasheed says he is appalled by the language used by a top official of the current government against the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.
This comes after top-ranking officials from the government posted on social media berating the Indian Prime Minister after he was featured in a video promoting Indian Lakashdeep islands as a local tourist destination for Indians.
It has been reported that the Indian government is trying to attract locals who have been flocking to the sandy white beaches of the Maldives which promoted government social media activists to post what some say are derogatory comments against the Indian Prime Minister.
While many are expressing concern about the lack of finesse on the government's part, former President Nasheed said that he found the language used towards the leader of a key ally, which is instrumental for Maldives’ security and prosperity appalling.
Nasheed further said that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and his government must distance themselves from such comments and give clear assurance to India they do not reflect government policy.
The government just now published a statement saying that it was aware of the derogatory comments against foreign leaders and that these opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the government.
